[Map] Space Wreck

I have a thing with wrecked spaceships ūüôā I like to design these maps and add a few twists. Lately I haven’t been able to do that many of these, but I have some plans to make parts of ships and space stations that are in varying conditions.

This is just a regular spaceship with a horizontal layout which in itself hints to some sort of artificial gravity and inertial dampening technology. So, this map is probably more suitable for space opera settings like Star Wars or Traveller.

I added the atmospheric indication colors there as an extra feature. The drone bay and the engineering sections are filled with toxic fumes that can be recycled away if the air filtration system (accessible through the service hatch in the engineering) is fixed.

Also, I thought it might be an interesting challenge to find someone still hibernating in a cryostatis pod, but as the pods are in vacuum, it might pose some difficulties getting the person out of the pod alive.

I hope you like this and find use for it.

[Map] A Buried Wreck

52_buried_wreck-web

During the last #mapvember I made a map of a spaceship buried in snow or ice. I find the idea of something buried into the ground waiting to be found very interesting and this was also one of the first things for me to write down to my idea list.

Eventually I got the line art for this made in September, but it did a little longer to finalize So, now I finally have this finished. I also decided to add some natural caverns there with some strange objects in them. I thought that this would make an interesting twist when scavenging the wreck or looking for survivors.

[Map] Shrike-class Scout Ship

046_scout_ship-web

Shrike-class Scout Ship

The Shrike-class scout ships are the tip of the spear in tracking and fighting the interstellar space piracy. These fast and manoeuvrable ships are designed for long-range scanning, high acceleration chases and interception tasks on remote systems with minimal military support.

A typical Shrike-class scout ship is armed with a forward mounted gauss-cannon powerful enough to disable a small cruiser, twin-torpedo tubes and dorsal and ventral PDC turrets.

In addition to the mounted weaponry, the Shrike-class scout ships are typically equipped with one or two boarding shuttles docked in one of the ship’s shuttle / cargo bays.

The ship’s crew complement includes at least 14 crew members and 8 marines trained in ship boarding operations. At most the ship can support a crew of 24 with 16 marines (40 persons), when double-bunks are used in the crew berths.

The ship’s operational range is 20 light-years or 3 months in active duty without resupply.

[Map] Hive Scout

043_hive_scout-web

I’ve supposed to draw a map of an organic ship for months already, but a few weeks ago I gave it a shot. This was not really in my comfort zone, as I’ve never done anything like this before.

This is a saucer shaped ship that has bioluminescent lights pulsating on the surface. Its interior is composed of weird organic materials and surfaces. The ship’s outer surface and some parts of the interrior, like floors and heavier bulkheads, resemble chitinous carapace.

It makes a low humming noise and it moves in insect-like manner making quick turns and zooms and occasionally stopping to hover in place. It has a dozen insect like legs that it extend from the bottom of the ship when it lands.  The ship also has a single tractor beam that it can use to pull objects into the ship from up to 50 meters away directly under the ship.

To determine the function for each of the spaces inside the ship choose or roll d10:

Function

  1.  Navigation controls
  2.  Power / Maneuvering system
  3.  Clone incubator
  4.  Dissection / Laboratory
  5.  Psionic mainframe
  6.  Clairvoyance organ
  7.  Telepathic communications
  8.  Mind-alteration / Memory wipe
  9.  Defensive system
  10.  Hibernation

[Map] Orca-class light freighter

036_orca-class_transpor-webt

I’ve been lately quite busy with the Indiegogo campaign for my upcomign (Finnish) RPG, but now it’s a bit more calm again.

I wanted to draw some kind of small freighter or similar space craft and I also wanted to try again the style I used in the Vargr Pocket Scout¬†I published recently. Although, this time I had a little different workflow due practical reasons. For example, I did not vectorize the lines this time, but I think this worked out well without that too. I think the vectored lines give a nice smooth feel to the lines that works better for scifi and modern maps, but I think this works with out the vectored lines just fine too ūüôā

I drew this map mostly with my Staedler fineliners (0.5, 0.3 and 0.1) and finalized the details with Neopiko fineliners (0.1, 0.05 and 0.03) and Copic markers (C-1, C-2, C-4, C-5 and C-7).

The Dotted Lines…

Oh, and I was asked about the dotted lines. Those are something what I call “fold field stabilizers”. This is related to how hyper drives work in a scifi universe that I’ve been working on since 2006 ‚Äď actually much before that already, since I started working on the universe some time in 2001. Anyway, in that setting hyper drive is based on folding or warping space. Pretty much like in Star Trek actually. The Oberman field generator (named after its inventor) creates a warp bubble around the ship, but without the stabilizers the field oscillates and deforms very easily if there are large masses nearby, for example. And this is what the stabilizers are for. They keep the fold field stable, even if the ship moves relatively close to a start or a planet.

[Map] Vargr Pocket Scout

033_vargr_pocket_scout-web

As an old Traveller RPG fan this map was a real pleasure to make. Megatraveller was the second RPG I’ve ever played. ¬†Why this is so meaningful thing for me requires a little anecdote.

A Boy With A Dream

When I was a kid we had D&D and Runequest in Finnish, but no scifi RPGs at all. I got my Megatraveller from my class mate when I was in the 6th grade, but it was all in English. My English was not that good at that time (we start studying English in Finland in the 3rd grade), but I was very intrigued by all the illustrations in the game. As I did not have any options, I took my English-Finnish-English dictionary in my other hand and Megatraveller in the other and started translating the books word-by-word. You could say that Megatraveller was the game that got me started in English RPGs.  Continue reading

[Map] The Capricious Bullhead

Interplanetary Cargo Hauler "The Capricious Bullhead" - Click to enlarge

The Capricious Bullhead, or just “Bullhead”¬†for short, is a Ladybird-class interplanetary tug, that is typically used to tow cargo within a star system. The ship does not come equipped with a hyperjump¬†capable¬†Oberman drive system, but it still has powerful ion thrusters that allows the ship to accelerate to high interplanetary speeds to haul the cargo fast to its destination.

Capricious Bullhead was lost en-route to its registered destination and the ship wreck is found drifting far from its intended route with no power. A close scan reveals that there are still a few warm spots in the ship and a few systems that are still online.

You decide what is lurking inside the ship or what is the conspiracy behind this ship’s fate.

[Map] Panopticon-class Prisoner Transport Vessel

prisonertransportship-fancy

This patron supported map was originally published on Patreon in January 2016.

I started to experiment with some alternative¬†fill patterns to replace the “Dyson-style” hatch pattern with something more suitable for spaceships and other technical structures. After a few tries I came up with this pattern. I made a small sample, and decided to make a bit larger map using the same pattern. This little experiment turned into a full map of a prisoner transport spaceship.

[Map] Black Phoenix Down

Mission Briefing

One of our Efreet-class shuttles was intercepted by local insurgents and we have located the shuttle’s crash site.

We expect the insurgent to be scavenging the ship wreck for parts and taking all survived crew members as hostages.

The shuttle has an armored pod for VIP persons and we have picked up its signal close to the crash site.

[Map] Wrecked Spaceship

HSF-wreck

This is a quick map I did to test the idea of vertically built spaceships and it was kind of inspired by The Expanse¬†tv-series and one of its spaceships. ¬†So, in other words, this map was made hard scifi in mind ‚Äď no artificial gravity except for rotation or acceleration, for instance.

Normally this ship would be like a tower when it’s under acceleration, but otherwise there’s no gravity and it would be more like a tube divided into sections.
