[Map] A Ruined Castle

Ancient ruined castles with overgrown vegetation and crumbled walls have always been fascinating locations in fantasy RPG’s for me. So, here’s one ūüôā

In the cellar there’s a room behind the collapsed hallway. I would treat this as a secret door to see if the characters can notice that there’s something behind the fallen blocks of stone and gravel.

[Map] The Fallen Lighthouse

The old lighthouse that used to provide the ships a safe passage around the rocky shores of the Shardy Waters, has fallen into ruins a long time ago.  The cellar of the lighthouse has a secret room with a secret escape route through the caverns that are located under the ruins of the lighthouse. Now the caverns are infested with underground dwelling creatures.

This map was fun to play and I wanted to use to hone my skills with coloring maps. It’s still surprisingly time-taking and I learned again a lot while doing this map. You’ll probably see more of colored maps in the near future, as I’ll try a couple more techniques to speed up my work and reduce the amount of redundant techniques.

For this map I used Photoshop to color the scanned lineart (see below). I just colored different elements, like trees, rocks, floors and wooden furniture, on their own layers and added the shadows and light on separate layers. I used different blending modes and opacity levels to have the desired look.

I hope you like it.

Here’s how I design adventures. I scribble notes on print outs of the maps. Fast and handy ūüôā

[Map] The Ruined City

The Ruined City a.k.a. The City of Ruins was requested by one of my $5 patrons who wanted to have a map of a part of a gigantic ancient city that lies now in ruins. Because of the deadline, I got a little help from my colleague, who did a quick sketch of the city layout on computer and I drew over it and added the details and shading. It was actually a very interesting mixed technique to work with. I might try that in the future again.

This map was my first practice on an isometric grid and I have actually learned a thing or two from that. One thing is that I should not do the shading on gridded paper, because it fades away when I edit the grids out leaving me with a coarse looking black and white line art.
