Mining Station HPT-3B A.K.A. “Hephaestus Station”

The Hephaestus Station is located on the second moon of gas giant HPT-3. The moon is mostly covered by highly toxic water solution and it’s volcanically highly active. There are numerous underwater volcanoes under the moon’s vast ocean and around those regions highly valuable mineral, called amatium, can be harvested.

[Map] Orca-class light freighter

I’ve been lately quite busy with the Indiegogo campaign for my upcomign (Finnish) RPG, but now it’s a bit more calm again.

I wanted to draw some kind of small freighter or similar space craft and I also wanted to try again the style I used in the Vargr Pocket Scout I published recently. Although, this time I had a little different workflow due practical reasons. For example, I did not vectorize the lines this time, but I think this worked out well without that too. I think the vectored lines give a nice smooth feel to the lines that works better for scifi and modern maps, but I think this works with out the vectored lines just fine too 🙂

I drew this map mostly with my Staedler fineliners (0.5, 0.3 and 0.1) and finalized the details with Neopiko fineliners (0.1, 0.05 and 0.03) and Copic markers (C-1, C-2, C-4, C-5 and C-7).

The Dotted Lines…

Oh, and I was asked about the dotted lines. Those are something what I call “fold field stabilizers”. This is related to how hyper drives work in a scifi universe that I’ve been working on since 2006 – actually much before that already, since I started working on the universe some time in 2001. Anyway, in that setting hyper drive is based on folding or warping space. Pretty much like in Star Trek actually. The Oberman field generator (named after its inventor) creates a warp bubble around the ship, but without the stabilizers the field oscillates and deforms very easily if there are large masses nearby, for example. And this is what the stabilizers are for. They keep the fold field stable, even if the ship moves relatively close to a start or a planet.

[Map] The Ghost Tree

This was originally drawn for Astraterra RPG and based on a design by Jonas Mustonen. I really liked how this map can be both an illustration or a map and I think this can be useful in other settings than Astraterra’s. One story seed that came to my mind was that the island was raised to the skies due to a failed magical experiment of sorts. There might have been other consequences too sucking all life from the island and turning all inhabitants into undead creatures or some other horrible abominations.

I drew this with my usual set of tools: 0.5, 0.3, 0.1 and 0.05 Neopiko fineliner pens, Letraset bleed proof marker paper for the line and Copic markers for the shading. After the lineart and shading was done, I gave this a quick treatment in Photoshop.
