[Map] The Prismatic Castle

023_the_prismatic_castle-web

Here’s a map me and my friend are working on for Astraterra RPG. Because Astraterra is a roleplaying game for all ages, significant amount of the players are school kids and therefore we wanted to have some kind of light educative aspect in this map and adventure. I don’t remember exactly where the idea about using colors came, but we ended up using the colors of the rainbow, or in other words prism.

[Map] The Temple of Iron

temple_of_iron_web

This three-level dungeon – well, two dungeon levels plus one ground level, to be precise – anyway, this dungeon was a sudden side project I did. The idea was to experiment with kind of map “triptychs”. The idea is that I would start making maps with three levels, locations, etc. Then you could mix and match different parts from different maps. Take an old mine from one, caverns from another and a weird forest from a third one, for example.

This map was the first one in this series and in future I will try to make the levels/locations/parts of the maps more separate, so that you can for example print the map and cut out the part you would like to use.

But, about the map itself…

When I started to draw this map I wanted to make three quite different levels or locations and riff of the idea of one of my earlier maps where a spacecraft was buried in ice. I wanted to make a ruined temple of sorts, which would be actually a wreck of a spacecraft turned into a temple. Now this temple has been abandoned, but there are cold and dark catacombs and dungeons built beneath it.

If you dare to venture to the lowest level you can find a strange tomb surrounded by humming and hissing piping, dripping condensed water and strange sweet smelling fluids. In the tomb there are seven sarcophagi; six smaller ones and one large. There seems to be something inside of them. When you try to take a closer look inside one of them, you hear a sudden loud hiss and one of the sarcophagi opens up letting out steam and pale light…

[Map] Space Bar

I had to skip gym today, so I had a little extra time. I asked my patrons on Patreon for some ideas and got a whole bunch of them. I picked one of the ideas which I thought was something that could come in handy, and I could do fairly quickly with the time I had at my hands. The other great ideas I was provided with were equally good, but many of them would have taken too much time to do properly. I’m adding them to my to-do list and going to do them later.

Many fantasy RPG adventures start at a tavern, and so do cyberpunk and scifi adventures. Where else would you go to find a job for a little extra income than a shady bar full of mercs, crooks and other scum and villainy.

This map has two levels. The lower level has a bar with a small stage and restrooms. At the upstairs there are a few booths and a VIP room with a large table for gambling or gang boss meetings (what else would VIP rooms be used for?!). From the VIP room there’s an access to the bar owner’s  office where all the best deals are made.

This map was my first practice on an isometric grid and I have actually learned a thing or two from that. One thing is that I should not do the shading on gridded paper, because it fades away when I edit the grids out leaving me with a coarse looking black and white line art.

[One-Page Dungeon] The Temple of Judgement

This patron supported map was originally published on Patreon in February 2016.

In the city of Vasciza all criminals are not tried in the court. Crimes commited against people who have faith in the old gods are taken into the Temple of Judgement. There the devout priests of Vaaka – the blind god with a black and a white hand – will bring the felons before the avatar of Vaaka, who will decide their final fate and judgement in an age-old ceremony of sentencing.
